About Us

We provide services to individuals and departments to assist them in carrying out the responsibilities assigned to them through legislation and university policy.

Environmental Health and Safety is committed to providing professional environmental health and safety services to the Concordia community. Our services support the academic, research and service mission by protecting the health, safety and integrity of its members, and by proactively promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

The responsibility for maintaining a safe and healthy environment is shared by every member of the University community. All managers are expected to manage the environmental health and safety issues that affect their units and the individuals under their supervision. However, individual employees and students, with the help of Safety Officers, are also expected to participate in the identification, elimination and control of the hazards over which they have control, and to take all reasonable steps to conduct themselves in a manner which does not endanger themselves, other members of the Concordia community, or the visiting public.

The office supports individuals and groups in the exercise of their rights and responsibilities, provides professional advice and technical support to managers at all levels, provides official liaison with external regulatory bodies and performs an audit function for compliance. It informs senior management about serious problems and legislative changes. The office also manages or coordinates those aspects of the environmental health and safety programme that have been centralised: fire prevention, injury/incident reporting, hazardous materials management, radiation safety, industrial hygiene, first aid training and emergency response.
